When Nash Building + Interiors was enlisted to transform the worst house on one of Burleigh’s best streets into a light-filled coastal entertainer, it turned out to be quite the personal project.
"Coincidentally, it had been my Grandfather’s home during the 90s,” Kellie Nash tells Three Balls Red.
"Our clients Mitch and Dani were awesome at sharing their vision for their family home. Dani gave me a good guide to what she loved and together, we worked on bringing it all together.”
A nod to its coastal location, the family home, designed by Studio B Building Design’s Bree McVeigh and custom built to meticulous perfection by Nash Building + Interiors, is the perfect mix of quality and laidback,
approachable luxury.
The classic coastal weatherboard facade sets the scene for a relaxed, easy breezy family home but the living room ceilings, the striking stair void and the master suite provide elevated points of interest.
“Although it is a practical family home, it is always nice to create little moments of ‘wow’ which both the clients and their guests can enjoy,” says Bree.
Kellie says the large picture windows positioned around a mature olive tree, seen from four different rooms, casting different light at different times of the day is a defining design feature.
“The natural stone floor and wall tiles Dani chose for the powder room with Soktas wall lights and a Rachel Donath mirror was like walking into a very earthy, sophisticated, warm hug,” says Kellie.
Three Balls Red supplied the kitchen splashback, Zellige tiles and the 600 x 600 wall tiles.
Congratulations to Nash Building + Interiors , Studio Bree, Living 4 Landscapes and all trades involved in this beautiful project.

Five Minutes with Bree McVeigh from Studio B Building Design
TBR: Can you share the design brief for Nash Building’s Bluejay Project?
B: To create a family home that was practical in layout but easy and beautiful to live in with a fabulous connection between inside and outside.
TBR: What were some key considerations?
B: The size of the project. We had a budget and target square meters to meet so it was about making sure the design included all of the spaces the clients needed and wanted and ensuring those spaces felt generous and connected.
Aspect was also important to make sure the design suited the aspect and made the most of the northeast facing aspect as much as possible. This was achieved with the U-shaped courtyard, giving us the opportunity to bring more light and air-flow into the home.

TBR: Did sense of place and the coastal location play a role in the design of this home?
B: Absolutely! It’s always great to be able to design a home that reflects its location. This project is a great blend of traditional and coastal, reflecting its location in gorgeous Burleigh.
TBR: What would you say are the defining architectural features?
B: The light. The floor plan allowed for a beautiful light and breezy home.
I would also say, simplicity. Though the exterior is clad and there are feature gables and front pergola that give it a coastal vibe. Overall the design is simple and we didn't need to add a lot of unnecessary features.
