With the mercury dropping and the days getting shorter, it is time to cocoon in our homes for the winter months. Whether you’re planning some minor styling tweaks or a major renovation, there are some strong seasonal trends to incorporate into the home to enhance the appeal of your abode for winter hibernation and entertaining.
“Every year we get excited about being able to layer heavier textures and add in warmer tones as the heat of summer slowly - very slowly for the Gold Coast - disappears,” says Danielle Cattell of Design DC.
To celebrate the start of winter, the Three Balls Red interior team have curated a list of the hottest interior trends this season so our clients can stay ahead of the curve.
Rich Colours
Cattell predicts the welcome shift away from safe neutrals continues into winter 2024 with deeper, richer, moodier hues adding sophistication and subtle energy to a room.
“This means a dive back into richer jewel tones in green, deep blue, and burgundy red as well as rich earthy tones like darker browns, chocolate, cocoa, rust, deep forest greens,” she said. Whilst bolder hues are undeniably impactful, they instantly elevate and add a sense of calm to a space if introduced correctly.
Stripes
Playful stripes will weave their way into bathrooms, pool landscapes and kitchens this season - and Team TBR are not mad about it.
Injecting fun and personality into any space and bridging the gap between traditional and modern decor, stripes can be introduced subtly with bed sheets or couch cushions, in carpets, rugs and wallpaper for an artistic element or as bathroom tiling features or kitchen splashbacks for a more powerful statement.
Wood-panelled walls
The sexy 70s-inspired Burleigh Towers project was strong evidence that dark wood-panelled walls are very much having a revival right now.
Oozing warmth and bringing that connection to nature back into our homes, wood-clad walls are very much having a moment.
Today’s look is a nod to the 70s with a modern twist and a fresh way to add texture and intrigue to a space whether it be a bedroom feature wall, hallways, wardrobes and living spaces.
There are myriad of wood materials on the market meaning timber wall panels are affordble for every budget and taste.
Shop sustainably and locally
Conscious and ethical choices have never been more important, with many of our clients placing increasing value on where and how their items are made.“I do feel the sustainability of our choices are front of mind moving into the winter months,” says Sacha Storey from Connected Space Styling.
This includes incorporating organic, natural materials such as wood and stone into the home as well as making sustainable choices that will last the test of time.Shopping from local artisans and brands with ethical manufacturing transparency such as Gold Coast funiture brand and Three Balls Red supplier, Fort Kingsley, ensures clients can shop consciously but don’t need to compromise on quality and style.
Vintage-style lighting
The Three Balls Red design team are known to emphasise the importance of a clever lighting scheme and ligting choices to our clients.
Afterall, light affects our mood and sets the overall tone of a room, particularly when it comes to integrrating much-needed patina to living areas.
Vintage-inspired floor lamps and pendants are truly the look du jour in interiors this winter and can really add a point of interest to a room.

Designer’s tip
“Even if you don't want to change up all your bedding, just add in a new throw, rug or blanket that is rich in colour and texture,” says Design DC’s Danielle Cattell. “Whether it be a thick knit or a faux fur, nothing screams winter warmer like a faux fur throw on the bed or on the sofa.”
