ZERO 9 CONSTRUCTIONS
With a slew of flawless, recently completed commercial projects – and more in planning and construction – plus a burgeoning architectural residential division, Zero 9 Constructions certainly have a lot of celebrate. This year marks the company’s milestone 10th year in business so TBR caught up with founder and director, Ryan McAlpin, to chat about the secrets of the company’s longevity, the Coast’s booming hospitality scene and what’s next for Zero 9.
This year you celebrate a decade of Zero 9. Congratulations! Can you tell us how Zero 9 began?
Zero 9 was built off a desire to offer a personalised service in a business environment - professional, personal, authentic, and passionate.
Where does the name come from?
My wife Karley and I met in 2009, hence the name Zero 9. I wanted a business name that had meaning, was memorable and not your everyday company name.
Ten years of business is something to be very proud of, especially in this industry. What do you think is the secret to Zero 9’s longevity? What are your non-negotiables when it comes to your business?
The business is built off knowledge, gut feeling, a driving passion and always providing a personal touch. I believe in authenticity, honesty, trust and building strong relationships.
What are some of your most inspiring projects to date?
To me, the most inspiring ones are when you have 100 per cent buy-in from all involved; the designer, the client, the builder are all completely invested and have faith in the process. We have been lucky enough to be involved with some great projects over the years, each having their own individual elements that make them so unique, fun and inspiring. It would be impossible to single out any project as they have all inspired us in a way.

You are known for your impeccable commercial construction work but have recently expanded to architectural residential projects. Do you enjoy working across both areas of construction?
What excites me about the architectural residential sector at the moment, is how commercial methods are being used and adapted. The use of exposed concrete, oversized glass - just pushing the boundaries of traditional residential construction. It just made sense, and felt like the right time for us to grow into this space.
The Gold Coast’s hospitality, culinary, design and cultural scenes have undergone a major metamorphosis in recent years. It must be an exciting time for you professionally?
There is no shortage of hospitality growth at the moment. It is exciting to be cemented as a premium fit-out company and the projects we are known for in the hospitality space.
The change in the Gold Coast hospitality, culinary scene and their complimenting design has definitely been lifted to a new level in recent years. Clients and designers are really pushing the boundaries and our community is really embracing the change. It truly is an exciting time for us and it challenges our way of thinking and our construction processes.
Can you talk about some of your current projects?
We are currently working with The Star Gold Coast delivering some really exciting venues. We are building a stunning new art gallery [with a bar, of course) and have a few awesome jobs coming through Pacific Fair, a few in Fortitude Valley, and some very cool projects in Byron Bay. We are currently building a stunning two-storey waterfront home at Burleigh as well as an acreage dream home in Coopers Shoot. We have a few other canal-front beauties in the works, also.
You also have a new lighting brand, Objects for Thought. Can you tell us a little about OFT and what we can expect design-wise?
Yes definitely! The brand is the culmination of quite a few years of friendship and collaboration with Jay Jermyn. We design and manufacture contemporary lighting for both commercial and residential projects. With OFT, we are building a brand to collaborate not only with artists and designers but with builders, architects and interior designers. With our first products, we have designed a range that can really establish a visual language throughout a project.
The iterative nature in which the Rider range builds on itself allows the lights to work in either small or grand spaces bringing a consistent aesthetic through different light fixtures. We also have quite a few ranges we are working on behind the scenes that we will launch over the coming months and years.

Who or what inspires you creatively?
I am a massive fan of architects and designers that have the ability to create something that is totally different to anything that I expected/envisioned in a space. It sparks something in me when I see a set of plans and I am truly blown away by their ingenuity, creativity and out-of-the box thinking.
You seem to have the perfect balance of a fulfilling, successful career with a happy family life. What is the secret?
It is not easy…Karley and I are blessed to have four amazing children - Hudson, 7, Elliott, 5, Reeve, 3, and Halle, 1 - but combining family with two construction businesses and a café – we have a café at Zero 9 HQ called Here - it is a lot!Sometimes work takes a lot out of me and without Karley being the absolute pillar of strength that she is, this wouldn’t be half of what it is. Also having the right team behind me that believe in Zero 9 and are just as passionate as I am, makes the business what it is.
You have a great relationship with Three Balls Red. Why do you opt to source from TBR and what do you think is our point of difference?
The TBR team are as passionate about this industry as we are and that’s why we have such a great understanding. Nothing is a problem, they understand how fast-paced this industry is, and the showroom is so great to send clients into. The girls know colours, know interiors, and just genuinely want to be a part of the project.
What is next for Zero 9, and what is one thing you haven’t yet done but want to achieve in the next decade?
Do you know what we really want to do? Renovate a motel! A design-led motel with funky rooms, an awesome pool, bar and cafe. And maybe take a overseas holiday. Remember those? [laughs].
