This year has been a rewarding one for Jamie Paterson, director of design and construction company 4D Renovations, with multiple award-winning projects completed and a Housing Industry Association finalist award nomination under his belt despite 2022 proving to be a challenging for post-pandemic construction.

Three Balls Red caught up with Jamie to chat about a one-off special project built and designed by 4D – trust us, this one is word class - the secret to longevity in business and his ambitions for the future.

This year has been a huge one for 4D. Can you talk about some of your highlights professionally?

After winning a couple of awards last year at the Housing Industry Association Awards [HIA] night we were very happy to be named finalist again this year. We were also involved in multiple award-winning projects with Earthborne By Design. We designed a one-off special project, and also turned construction around in record time of 13 weeks for a large mansion. In this current climate, it was a huge testament to our team and our suppliers.

What are some of your most inspiring projects to date?

This is a hard one as we have worked on many amazing jobs with our clients. Our recent Tugun house that we completed a few months ago was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We had some very creative clients and together, we created something magical. Watch this space..

What do you think is the secret to 4D's longevity? What are your non-negotiables when it comes to your business?

Well, 4D is all about open communication, which allows our team to build trust through transparency and support one another.
I’m all about focusing on the solution, not the problem, which is something I personally try to implement with the team. I find this allows us to work together voicing positive ideas and solutions to provide a better outcome for our clients. Non-negotiables in business for me is definitely “no short cuts” whether you are building a house or a business, you should always have an eye on longevity.

Who or what inspires you creatively?

Meeting new, extraordinary people through work, travelling and, of course, the huge array of talent there is in the building industry in Australia.

You also have a new lighting brand, Objects for Thought. Can you tell us a little about OFT and what we can expect design-wise?

Yes definitely! The brand is the culmination of quite a few years of friendship and collaboration with Jay Jermyn. We design and manufacture contemporary lighting for both commercial and residential projects. With OFT, we are building a brand to collaborate not only with artists and designers but with builders, architects and interior designers. With our first products, we have designed a range that can really establish a visual language throughout a project.
The iterative nature in which the Rider range builds on itself allows the lights to work in either small or grand spaces bringing a consistent aesthetic through different light fixtures. We also have quite a few ranges we are working on behind the scenes that we will launch over the coming months and years.

You seem to have the perfect balance of a fulfilling, successful career with a happy family life. What is the secret?

The work/family life balance can be challenging, and I have been guilty of letting work take over in the past. I’ve become much more experienced over the years and I think it is knowing when I need to disconnect from work and just switch it all off.

You have a great relationship with Three Balls Red. Why do you opt to source from TBR and what do you think is our point of difference?

As I mentioned previously, communication, trust, and support are important to our business and this also the case our suppliers.
Three Balls Red has been there from the start for us and having that strong relationship has positive results for everyone involved! TBR doesn’t feel like your everyday tile shop. It has ambience and an atmosphere complemented by real people who love their job.

What is next for 4D, and what is one thing you haven’t yet done but want to achieve in the next decade?

Next for 4D is designing and building a few of our own projects. We have one starting at the end of this year and I’m excited to have full creative control of it. In the next decade we will be one of the top design and construct companies here on the Gold Coast!

We don’t doubt it!
Thanks, Jamie.
