With more than 25 years’ experience in the building industry, Gold Coast-construction and interior design company, Davey Constructions, bring a wealth of experience and expertise to every project.

Three Balls Red has had a long-running relationship with husband and wife duo, Jared and Sarah, and can’t speak highly enough of their work – and professionalism.

We’ve had the privilege of working on many projects with the Daveys, including their very own Coastal Cottage project, a lovingly and luxuriously reimagined 1903s worker’s cottage at Burleigh Heads.

We caught up with talented interior designer Sarah to chat about the importance of quality, their largest and most inspiring project yet and how they successfully combine business and home life.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love bringing clients’ dreams to life. From my initial design concepts, moodboards and documentation right through to the actual fit-out of our projects, as a designer the most rewarding part of my job is seeing our clients’ faces when we have finished the home and it has exceeded their expectations.

What is the Davey Constructions point of difference?

There are not many builders on the Gold Coast that provide an in-house interior design service. This is something we do and the beauty of working with a husband-and-wife-team is that nothing is missed.Jared has an amazing eye for detail when it comes to the construction side of the builds and mine for the ‘finer’ things like joinery design, selection and sourcing of fixtures and fittings. We run a very seamless business and, as all the documentation is shared between both sides of the build, coordination of site meetings is much easier and - most of the time - we don’t fight [laughs].

What are some of your most inspiring projects to date?

Our recently-completed ‘The Kembali’ project, our largest build, located on the lake at Burleigh Heads. Stunning aspects of the hinterland and picturesque sunsets make this home the ultimate sense of villa luxury. We used a range of high-end finishes, feature lighting and plenty of custom joinery throughout the home.Bianca Gemmill from BCG Design designed the home with beautiful arch windows throughout and natural light flooding in from all aspects of the home. It’s a dream! Also, we absolutely love our family home. It’s full of character and warmth, unique to most properties located in the area.

What are some of your non-negotiables in business?

Quality! At times, we have clients who may be looking for a cheaper alternative and we are always open to exploring different products out there. However, after building a large number of homes already, we certainly know the difference between quality and cheap products and finishes. We won’t negotiate on quality when it comes to the integrity of the home.

Sarah, you are so talented with the interiors. Who or what inspires you creatively?

My main muse in the interior design world is Kelly Wearstler.I recently returned from a trip to the US and was lucky enough to stay at Downtown LA Proper Hotel, designed by Kelly, and also visited Santa Monica Proper Hotel. To be there and soak up all of her interior design goodness was a dream. The way she re-purposes old furniture and objects to create something innovative and new blows my mind. I love her ability to layer a space with hundreds of textures - it just works so well.Travel also ignites my creative side. Having recently returned from overseas, I realised just how much my mind was expanded on both an architectural and interior design level.

What are some key trends in design and construction right now?

Arches have made been around for a long time, dating back to Ancient Rome, but they have been on-trend for quite some time now. Personally, I am a huge fan. I love architecture that curves and softens a space and brings out a more feminine side to the design.

What is the secret to working so closely together in business and maintaining a happy home life?

That’s a tricky one! We’ve been together for over 17 years so we have a pretty good understanding of each other and the way we both operate so we try very hard to listen to each other.

Why do you opt to work with Three Balls Red?

I’ve known Jas for a long time now and we’ve had plenty of fun moments along the way!Jas and the girls at Three Balls Red offer the best service and best range of tiles on the Gold Coast. I love popping in there for a project as it feels like a little social outing with my Roller Door coffee, walk around the store, chat with the girls and, of course, I always come out nailing selections for a project.

What is next for Davey Constructions?

Our most exciting news is that we are selling The Davey House and moving onto our next Davey development. Our goal has always been to move into doing our own personal developments, and the next opportunity is certainly going to raise the bar on what we already have set as a highly reputable building company on the Coast.
