COLOUR ME HAPPY

Say goodbye to contemporary coastal and light tonal colour palettes and embrace playful, eclectic and bold colour selections in 2022. Colour-loving maximalists will be in their element with bright pops of colour and bold patterns reigning supreme in interior design. “The coastal modern whites, light greys, cane and tonal palettes are definitely going to take a backseat,” says Three Balls Red’s Kiersten Lowden. Pops of unconventional colours will extend to tiles, tapware – Australian brand Sussex Taps have an inspiring range of premium colour selections - stoves, splashbacks, kitchen benchtops, accessories and décor. “Instead of opting for white, clients are taking the leap and going for coloured cabinetry to give their home canvas a bit of character,” says design consultant, Rebecca Stanley.

CHECK MATE

Checkerboard floors have been gaining popularity in mainstream design and our love of this retro trend shows no sign of diminishing. A classic choice for centuries, interior designer Kiersten Lowden says we will be seeing a slew of checkboard floors and benchtops in various formats and colour combinations for a fresh twist on the popular pattern. Whether it is a subtle neutral tone-on-tone pattern or a bold combination of brighter colours – The Three Balls Red team love blush and burgundy – checkerboard floors, benchtops and splashbacks have maximum impact.

MOTHER EARTH

Our homes have been transformed into welcoming sanctuaries to retreat to in these uncertain times so earth tones and natural materials will remain strong design trends moving into 2022. “It’s all about earthy colours and texture, a mixture of natural materials like timber, cork, metal, natural wood and terrazzo,” says interior designer, Loreta Bitteler. With a renewed passion for craftsmanship, thoughtful design and artisanal objects across the globe, clients have adopted a sustainable and responsible approach to design and their interior choices, which is set to continue into the new year.

STONE AGE

Natural stone as a contrasting element will be heavily featured in homes and commercial environments in the coming year. Whether it be exposed stone walls, walkways or accents, natural stone adds drama and beauty to a space. “Travertine is obviously very popular at the moment however I think in 2022, people will start to value natural stone and stone features as an interior must,” says Rebecca Stanley.

CRAZY PAVE – WITH A TWIST!

The 1970s-style crazy pave took the world by storm in 2021. Adding texture an interest to a space, crazy paving is a style of paving in which tiles in irregular shapes and sizes are laid out like mosaics for a beautiful, organic look – and our clients couldn’t get enough of it. Interior consultant Kiersten Lowden says the trend will remain strong - but with a twist. “I think we will see crazy pave with different, unexpected colours,” says Lowden. Watch this space for Three Balls Red’s exclusive collaboration with the talented Sophie and Michael Bell from Peppa Hart.

DRAMATIC + MOODY

Last year may have been all about Hamptons and modern coastal but be prepared for a sleek and sexy shift. “Dark and moody interiors are coming back in a big way,” says Loreta Bitteler. Expect to see rich chocolates, deep greens and burnt oranges for an evocative and moody aesthetic. “Darker timber tones like dark walnut are also coming back and we are working with them in both retro and modern interiors,” says Rebecca Stanley. Black accents and hardware are also set to be key trends in 2022, which adds edge and depth to contemporary spaces.
